The plaque to the left says: "From 20 September 1940 until 31 August 1944 thousands of prisoners of the Gestapo stayed at the SS camp of Breendonk. On 19 August 1947 the national memorial of Breendonk Fortress was unanimously created by Parliament so as to ensure the enduring conservation of the fortress and to keep the remembrance of the events that took place there in order for this remembrance to promote the civic spirit of the nation and to favour the patriotic education of its youth". This trip was not "fun" but it was very enlightening. It is one thing to watch movies and read books about the Nazi atrocities of WWII. It an entirely different thing to... stand where they stood.
